To the editor,
The Trump administration recently announced its ecologically devastating plan to open offshore drilling up and down the East Coast.
Can you imagine the destruction an offshore oil spill could do to Rhode Island’s beaches and coastline and the damage it would cause to our fisheries and the recreational marine industry? This all happens when climate science tells us that we should be urgently reducing our dependence on fossil fuels.
Even if there is no spill, the industry of oil drilling will surely have a negative impact on our marine ecosystem. Now is the time to speak out.
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has opened a 60-day comment period for citizens to provide feedback on the proposal. Our voice must be loud and clear.
The Interior Department is holding 23 public meetings to explain their plan. On Jan. 25 from 3-7 p.m., there will be a public hearing on the new federal offshore drillingprogram at the Providence Marriott Downtown. You don’t have to come for the whole time.
You can also submit comments directly to BOEM thru their portal: www.regulations.gov/document?D=BOEM-2017-0074-0001.
