Chris Bulk impresses after replacing injured QB Kyle Bicho

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth Patriots football team didn’t miss a beat after losing starting quarterback Kyle Bicho to an injury in the second quarter against Central High Saturday.

Sophomore Chris Bulk, who previously had served as the team’s backup kicker and punter, replaced Bicho under center and threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to junior Daniel McKinnon with just seconds left in the first half.

Bulk didn’t stop there, as he also kicked a 23-yard field goal and made three point-after conversions en route to leading Portsmouth to a 24-14 victory over the Knights.

Before he went out early in the second quarter, Bicho led the Patriots to a 14-7 lead with two touchdown passes to senior Brian Hamilton — one for 9 yards, the other for 13.

Portsmouth is now 2-1 and tied for first place in Division I-B with Cranston West and La Salle Academy.

Next up for the Patriots is a matchup with Cranston West on the road this Friday, Oct. 5.
