Blizzard vs rain — Two storms in Westport

Within the hour snow has enveloped most of the town

It recently changed to all snow, but for much of the morning Westport was a tale of two towns.

It was the funniest thing, said Highway Surveyor Chris Gonsalves from behind the wheel of one of the town plows.

From the Highway Department on south it was all rain, he said. But from around Route 177 on north it was a blizzard.

They have dealt with one tree down — on Division Road — and had to clear a large limb from Hix Bridge Road, but otherwise we are doing our best to keep up. As of 1150 a.m. he guessed that seven or eight inches had fallen in the north end of town, less further south where it had rained.

Manning plows are all nine Highway Department crewmen backed by 20 private contractors. One plow lost its heat so had to be sidelined — windows kept fogging up — but that is not bad by past Westport standards and a reflection of recent efforts to upgrade the fleet.

Eversource reported shortly before noon that a half dozen customers were without power in Westport.

We have seen some people out on the roads — not many and none in the ditch yet that I know of, Mr. Gonsalves said.
