“I wanted freedom, open air and adventure. I found it on the sea.” (Alaine Gerbault, sailor)

Captain Timothy Furtado, 82, of Harwinton, Conn., passed away peacefully on August 8, 2018, at Hartford Hospital.

Born on May 24, 1936 in Mattapoisett, Mass., Tim was the son of the late Antone and Florence (Gallop) Furtado. He served in the Army National Guard for eight years. Tim was a respected and distinguished sea captain, an avid sailor, and proud to be a part of New Bedford’s fishing industry and heritage. For 48 years, he led a very successful life as a commercial scallop fisherman, well known as captain and owner of the boat Seafarer.

Tim and his beloved wife of 33 years, Barbara (Manna) Furtado, lived in Tiverton. He enjoyed cooking for his crews and created wonderful meals at home for family and friends that will be sorely missed! He was a loving and gentle man who had a gift for making everyone around him feel comfortable. He loved telling his stories about his life at sea and never had a bad word to say about anyone.

His most cherished times were spent walking the beach with his dog Duke. He also loved being outdoors and could get anything to grow; he spent hours in his yard planting trees and flowers. He enjoyed traveling with Barbara to St. Maarten in the winter and loved it when she planned their cruises to Bermuda, Italy and Portugal, to name a few. He was a lifelong Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots devoted fan. At sunset, you could find him outdoors on the glider, enjoying his cocktail hour and Manhattan, overlooking the Sakonnet River.

In addition to his wife, Tim leaves his children, Tammy Perry and husband Robert of Fall River; Kimberly Robinson of Cumberland, Md.; Timothy Furtado of Millis, Mass.; Nora Lee Duarte of Montross, Va.; David Rupard and wife Lauren of Tampa, Fla.; Gwendolyn Hansen and husband Robert of Burlington, Conn.; Donna Megliola of Weatogue, Conn.; Michelle Randall of Pawtucket, RI; and sister Judith Talgo of Fairhaven, Mass.. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, Steven, Scott, Jennifer, Laura, Alex, Daniel, Derek, Kim, Lisa, Jared, Tricia and Dawn; 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Anthony and David Furtado Sr., a sister, Nancy Jacques, and grandson, Jeffrey Laberge.

A celebration of Tim’s life will be held Sunday, August 19, at 4:30 p.m. at Seamen’s Bethel, 15 Johnny Cake Hill, New Bedford. There will be no calling hours and burial will be private at a later date. To leave an online condolence, share a memory or photo, please visit Tim’s tribute page at www.ahernfuneralhome.com.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Tim’s name to the New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center, Inc. fishingheritagecenter.org.

The family would also like to thank the wonderful staff on Bliss 11, CB5 and Palliative Care Team of Hartford Hospital for their compassionate care. Our Tim was one of a kind. He made the world a better place for all of us, and we are blessed and thankful to have had him in our lives.
