Cherie A. (Dennett) Murphy, 98, of Little Compton, passed away Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016 at Forest Farm Health Care Center in Middletown.

She was born in Newport on September 11, 1917, and lived in Middletown with her family until marrying “the love of her life,” John L. Murphy.

Cherie was the daughter of Helen Carney Dennett and Herbert W. Dennett and was the oldest girl in a large family of eight. Predeceasing Cherie were her brothers Alec, Herbert, Michael and Lionel; and her sisters Jane, Hester and Marion.

Mrs. Murphy was a 1939 graduate of the Newport Hospital School of Nursing and continued to work at the hospital for 30 years.  Cherie lived in Newport and raised one beloved daughter, Kathleen, who was always by her side. Their friendship was spent enjoying gardening, cooking and baking, doing crafts, traveling and enjoying elegant tea parties with friends and family.

She will be dearly missed by her family, Kathleen Chase, and husband Francis of Little Compton. Also, Cherie leaves behind several grandchildren of whom she was very proud: Reliance Sherman and her husband Robert of Cary, North Carolina; Francis Chase IV and his wife Andrea of Tiverton; John Chase and his wife Dr. Melanie McGuire of New Durham, New Hampshire; Benjamin Chase of Bristol; and Sarah and her husband Peter Ferreira of Portsmouth.

Cherie also leaves behind four great grandchildren, Robert and Grace Sherman, and Isaiah and Maggie Rose Chase. In addition, Cherie leaves behind her loyal friend Rhonda Goulart, who brightened her day with each and every visit. Lastly, she will be dearly missed by her loyal friends and “family” at Forest Farm Nursing Center, including her extraordinary caregivers Bianca, Tish and Sheila.

There will be no calling hours.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, Feb. 26, at 11 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Church, 74 Simmons Road, Little Compton. Burial to follow at Saint Columba Cemetery, 465 Brown’s Lane Middletown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Forest Farm Health Care Center, C/O Activity Fund, 193 Forest Ave., Middletown, RI  02842
