Comley: Legal costs — transparency, civility needed

Posted

During the course of campaigning, several people brought up the issue of the significant legal expenses incurred by the Town which required an additional appropriation last spring.

I did not offer an opinion about the justification for the overrun. However, the sheer number of cases, as well as the amount required to cover the unforeseen expense, seemed to take those attending, regardless of political association, by surprise. Moreover, only printing the names of fellow citizen plaintiffs in just one of the suits, struck many as bullying.

This bothered me as a community member and as a lawyer. The diverse and talented Democratic slate of candidates will strive for a transparent and civil relationship with the community.
