The family of a Tiverton woman who died Saturday in an apparent murder-suicide is trying to raise funds to give her a proper burial and care for her family.

According to the Bristol County District Attorney's office, Barbara J. Cruz, 77, was shot and killed by Omar Bradley, 72, who had been living with the victim's sister. She was a former member of the Tiverton School Committee.

Rehoboth police discovered Cruz and Bradley deceased after receiving a 911 call just before 11 a.m. Saturday. During the call, a relative said she had been on the phone with the victim when she heard a commotion and the phone disconnected.

"When she called back, no one answered," the DA's office said.

Cruz was a mother of four with eight grandchildren. Her daughter, Brenda Baker, said the family is obviously distraught and started a GoFundMe page to cover travel and funeral expenses for a funeral planned for this coming Saturday, Nov. 25, and to help relieve the family's financial burdens. As of Tuesday morning, the fund-raiser had brought in just under half of Baker's $10,000 goal.

“Our beautiful, dedicated, and kind mother was tragically taken from us through an act of senseless violence,” she wrote. “Our mother was helping to care for her older sister when her sister’s boyfriend became enraged and shot and killed our mother."
