Eleanor Pauline (Flores) Simons, 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 11, 2017, at Sunny Hills ALF in Homestead, Florida, Born in Little Compton on August 20, 1924, she was the daughter of John S. Fores and Mary (Fontes) Flores. Eleanor spent 83 years in Little Compton before moving to Florida to be near her two daughters.
Eleanor was one of 13 graduates of the Class of 1942 from J.F. Wilbur School in Little Compton. In 1948, she married the late Stanley H. Simons. They were married for 47 years before Stan passed away.
Eleanor was employed as a local telephone for the first ten years of their marriage. She was also employed by the US Postal Service at the town post office, and as assistant tax collector for the Town of Little Compton, from which she retired in the early 1990s.
Eleanor was always involved in her Little Compton community. She managed the Little Compton Community Center Meal Site for ten years, and was also active in the Little Compton Senior Citizens group, serving as president for a number of years.
In addition to her husband Stan, Eleanor was preceded in death by two of her older brothers, John S. Flores Jr., and Carlton D. Flores. She is survived by her daughters, Robbin Simons of Miami, Florida, and Dale (Simons) Silva of Key West, Florida; grandsons, David (Toni) and Bryan (Paige), and great-grandsons Brody and Parker, all of Key West; nephews, James Flores of East Freetown, and Carl Flores of Somerset; and many friends and extended family members who will miss her bright smile, quick wit and love of crossword puzzles, bingo and dancing.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 24, at 10 a.m. in St. Catherine of Siena Church, 74 Simmons Ave., Little Compton. Visiting hours are Friday, June 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Fern Acres Funeral Home, 72 Willow Ave., Little Compton.
