Irving D. “Peter” Humphrey, III, 88, of Tiverton

Irving D. “Peter” Humphrey, III, 88, of Tiverton, R.I. passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2018. He was the husband of the late Marjorie Sharples Humphrey, to whom he was married for 63 years before her passing in April of this year.

A son of the late Irving D. Humphrey, Jr. and the late Dorothy L. (Holden) Humphrey, he was born in Fall River, Mass., and was a lifelong resident of Tiverton. He was a 1948 graduate of St. George’s School in Middletown, R.I. He attended Bowdoin College and graduated from Bryant College in 1969. A veteran of the United States Army, he served as a Ranger during the Korean Conflict.

He was past President of P.D. Humphrey Co. in Tiverton and Chairman of the Board at Horner Millwork and North Atlantic Corporation in Somerset, Mass., until his retirement in 2012. He was also a longtime stockholder and member of the Lumbermens Merchandising Corporation (LMC).

An avid tennis player, he was a member of the Acoaxet Club, Warren’s Point Beach Club, and Elephant Rock Beach Club. He served on the Tiverton Budget Committee for 18 years and was a longtime member of the Newport Ski Club and Tiverton Yacht Club. He was a communicant of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.

He is survived by four children: a daughter, Ann H. Taylor, and her husband Dr. Dean Taylor of Durham, NC; three sons, Peter D. Humphrey and his wife Barbara of Tiverton, Attorney Richard S. Humphrey and his wife Kristen of Little Compton, and Attorney Robert H. Humphrey and his wife Michelle-Lee of Little Compton; a brother, William W. Humphrey and his wife Marilyn of Tiverton; a sister-in-law, Natalie Humphrey of Lakewood, WA; nine grandchildren, Jacob, Luke, Emma, Michael, John, Celeste and Jack Humphrey and Katherine and Benjamin Taylor. He was predeceased by his wife, Marjorie, and his brother, Lawrence H. Humphrey.

His funeral will be held on Saturday, June 2, at 11 a.m. in Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 1956 Main Road, Tiverton, RI 02878.  Visiting hours will be Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Cherry Place, 178 Winter St., Fall River.  Contributions may be made in his honor to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.
