To the editor:
This one bears watching. At the December 10 meeting of the new Tiverton Town Council, there was a discussion of replacing the town solicitor.
Three members of the new Town Council —Rob Coulter, Justin Katz, and Nancy Driggs — have brought suits against the town. Instead of recusing themselves, as they should have, the three are now engaged in picking the attorney who will represent the town in suits filed by them. Not only that, but Katz has proposed a buddy of his who will serve temporarily. Perhaps just long enough to give Coulter, Katz, and Driggs success in the suits they filed.
In an ordinary case, any resident of the town who brings a lawsuit against the town does not have the right to choose the attorney who will defend the town. In the case of Coulter, Katz, and Driggs, that is exactly what they are proposing to do. You might ask, doesn’t the Ethics Law prevent this? We will see.
Just for the record, the council scheduled their discussion for December 27, two days after Christmas when most people are not watching the Town Council.
