M. Shirley (Silveira) Bernier passed on to the next life peacefully at home on Saturday, July 21, 2018, surrounded by her family and grandchildren. 

Shirley was a dedicated teacher at Head Start and co-owner, along with her husband, of Cape Cod Cupola Co. in North Dartmouth. 

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, John E. Bernier, Jr., children Patricia, Kimberley and John IV, sister Nancy, numerous grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. 

Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Courtney Roderick Run for Recovery (in remembrance of Shirley and her granddaughter), 264 Bulgarmarsh Road, Tiverton, RI 02878. For online condolence book, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
