Portsmouth cleans up after storm, PHS cancels classes

PORTSMOUTH — The town is busy cleaning up after a high-wind coastal storm Sunday night and into early Monday morning that knocked down trees and branches all over Portsmouth.

Meanwhile, Portsmouth High School lost power and cancelled classes for Monday. This came after the the School Department, citing high winds and dangerous road conditions, had imposed a two-hour delay.

The private Pennfield School also lost power and also canceled classes for Monday.

The storm knocked out power to more than 100,000 people in Rhode Island, according to the National Grid website.

At about 8 a.m. Monday, three workers from the town’s Department of Public Works were busy cutting up fallen trees that had blocked a portion of Wapping Road. Police blocked off access to the street at Sandy Point Road.

“I’ve been here since 10 (Sunday night),” said DPW worker Neal Belliveau.

Mr. Belliveau said work crews were scattered all over town.

“There’s stuff everywhere,” he said.
