PORTSMOUTH — For the second straight year, the Portsmouth High School boys’ swim team placed fourth in the state championship meet at Brown University on Saturday.

The Patriots collected 136 team points in the meet, which was won by defending champion Bishop Hendricken (384), followed by Barrington High School (334) and Wheeler School (224).

Freshman Sam Steen had a strong showing. He came in fourth in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.29 seconds, and ninth in the 100-yard butterfly in 54.8 seconds.

He also joined his brother, Jake Steen, and Matthew Coughlin and Ruairi MacMillan to clock a time of 1:45.05 to take fourth place in the 200-yard medley relay. That same group also swam the 200-yard freestyle relay and clocked a time of 1:39.22, good enough for 10th place.

The Steens also competed with Coughlin and John Gilpin to take fourth place in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:26.37.

In other individual race, Coughlin placed sixth in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:01.84, and 14th in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:55.5.

Jake Steen took seventh place in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:05.37 and eighth in the 100-yard freestyle in 49.59.

The Patriots ended the regular season with a second-place finish in Division II.
