PORTSMOUTH — Several school records fell en route to Portsmouth High School’s fourth-place finish in the boys’ state swimming championship meet at Brown University no Saturday.
The Patriots scored 175 points as a team. Bishop Hendricken won the meet with 380 points, followed by Barrington with 279.
Portsmouth’s Sam Steen came in second in the 100-yard freestyle event, breaking his personal best with a time of 47.76 seconds.
He finished fourth in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.12 seconds, but that wasn’t his fasted time for the distance on Saturday. He set a new PHS record over that distance — 21.9 seconds — during the 400-yard freestyle relay. Joining Dan Coughlin, Matt Coughlin and Jake Steen, the Portsmouth quartet came in third and set a new school record with a time of 3:17.65.
Another school record was broken in the 200-yard freestyle relay, when the Steens joined Matt Coughlin and John Gilpin to place third in a time of 1:30.73.
Coughlin would come in third place in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:53.67, yet another school record.
Two more school records fell when Jake Steen finished with a time of 1:04 in the 100-yard breaststroke, and a 2:01.41 in the 200-yard individual medley. He finished in fifth place in both events.
Girls’ meet
The PHS girls’ team, which finished in 19th place, earned all of its 28 points by placing 10th in two relay events.
Claire Williams, Secilya Williams, Amelia Reed and Ellen Stack swam the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:49.55, and the 400-yard freestyle relay in 4:03.85.
