PORTSMOUTH — The early trailblazers who put the Portsmouth High School sports program on the map in the 1960s and ’70s will be inducted into the inaugural PHS Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, Oct. 14.

The event is sold out. More information is available here: www.portsmouthathletichof.com

The first inductees — 15 coaches, two championship teams from 1968, an athletic director and an “athletic booster” — will be honored at the Green Valley Country Club, 371 Union St. The event will begin with a cocktail hour and hors d'oeuvres at 4:30 p.m., followed by the induction ceremony at 5:30 p.m. A cash bar will be open.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
