PORTSMOUTH — Portsmouth School Superintendent Ana C. Riley, leader of the local school district since 2014, is one of four finalists for the job of superintendent of schools in New Bedford.

Reached for comment on Friday, Ms. Riley prefaced her remarks by saying she loved her job in Portsmouth.

“I work with a great team of leaders and we have amazing teachers and students,” she said. “However, it has been a dream of mine to lead an urban district. I grew up in Fall River, but my father's family lived in New Bedford, so I spent quite a bit of my childhood there. It's an opportunity I just couldn't pass up.”

Ms. Riley joins two other superintendents — one from Randolph, Mass., the other from Maynard, Mass. — who are being considered for the job, according to a report by southcoasttoday.com. The other applicant is a former assistant superintendent of New Bedford schools.

According to the report, the New Bedford School Committee plans to invite each candidate to spend a day touring the schools from March 19 to 22.

The committee expects to interview each candidate in public at 6 p.m. on the day he or she visits in the Keith Middle School auditorium, according to the report.

Prior to the interviews, New Bedford School Committee members will tour each finalist’s home school districts, the southcoasttoday.com report states.

Ms. Riley was hired as Portsmouth superintendent in June 2014, previously serving as superintendent in Dartmouth.

According to the southcoasttoday.com story, she’s completed coursework toward an Ed.D. in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University as well as toward a certificate of advanced educational leadership from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
