Portsmouth students recognized for achievements in art, music

PORTSMOUTH — The School Committee set aside a good portion of Tuesday’s meeting to celebrate local student Scholastic Music and Art Award winners for 2017.

Here are the students who were recognized, along with their awards:

• Noah Grammit and Robert Perdue: Silver Key Scholastic Art Award in film and animation

• Jenna Roy: Gold Key in art portfolio and a Silver Key in photography

• Rebecca Steinbach: Silver Key in photography

• Regan Thayer: Silver Key in painting

• Bryana Aguiar, Jonathan Myers, Ben Shapiro and Paige Shapiro: Named members of the Senior All-State Mixed Chorus

• Olivia Brennan and Sierra Harmon: Named members of the Junior All-State Treble Chorus

• Andrew Camara: Named member of the Senior All-State Band

• Dominique Dufour: Named member of the Senior All-State Women’s Chorus

• Thatcher Taylor: Named member of the Junior All-State Orchestra

• Amy Tenenbaum: Named member of the All-State Band

• Isabella Tobin: Named member of the Junior All-State Band

• Nathan Hilyard: All-State Middle School winner for bass clarinet

• Kirsten Quay: All-State Middle School winner for clarinet

• Amory Kirwin, Elloria Cowell, Ryan McNeilly and Riley Borden: All-State Middle School winners for chorus

Meet our staff
Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
