Democratic incumbents throughout the Sakonnet area retained their seats in the House of Representatives and Senate Tuesday, despite challenges from Republicans and Independents that were closer than some expected.

In Senate District 10, long-time East Bay incumbent Walter S. Felag Jr. defeated Republican challenger Allyn E. Meyer. Felag drew 5,725 votes (58.5 percent) to Meyer's 4,055 (41 percent).

In Senate District 12, incumbent Democrat Louis P. DiPalma earned 65.8 percent of the vote with 6,324. Tiverton challenger Stephen J. Horridge, a Republican, earned 3,281 votes (34.1 percent).

In the House of Representatives District 71 race, Democrat Michelle E. McGaw of Portsmouth will return for a second term, earning 2,993 votes (61.9 percent). Challenger Kobe J. Taylor, an Independent also from Portsmouth, took 1,804 votes (37.3 percent).

And in the House of Representatives District 70 race, incumbent Democrat John G. Edwards IV earned 2,607 votes (53.4 percent). Republican challenger Christopher M. Borden earned 2,272 votes (46.5 percent).

The results from the Rhode Island Secretary of State were  unofficial as of 8:58 p.m. Tuesday.
