Throngs turn out for Monday afternoon spectacle

TIVERTON — An eclipse of the sort that arrived Monday happens but once or twice in a lifetime and the Tiverton Public Library was well prepared.

The library stocked up with 1,000 pairs of eclipse viewing glasses — nearly half were given away to patrons ahead of the event, but at times it seemed they could have used even more.

So many people lined up for glasses as the eclipse reached its 2:30 p.m. peak here that library staff had to dole them out one per group — it worked out fine as most were more than happy to share, said Emily Goodman, library director.

Also willing to share were some who brought more elaborate gear — Bob Wilkinson happily let people gaze through his large telescope. And there were various other devices — pinhole cameras, even a welder’s mask that worked well.

The weather cooperated with mostly clear skies. Although the sun was never entirely blotted out by the moon in this part of the country, the moon did cover enough to look like, as one woman said, Pac Man had taken a bite out if it.
