Woman allegedly assaults Portsmouth officer after DWI arrest

Posted

PORTSMOUTH — A North Kingstown woman wouldn’t go quietly into the night after being arrested for driving while intoxicated on Saturday night, March 4, according to police.

Police said they pulled over Suzanne M. Lunt, 24, of 1475 Ten Road Road, for speeding on East Main Road near Child Street at about 8:40 p.m. Ms. Lunt, who had two passengers in the car, told  police they were traveling to a friend’s home in Portsmouth from Tiverton.

After failing a field sobriety test, police took Ms. Lunt to the station for processing, where she became irate after being denied her sweatshirt and jacket while returning to the female holding cell, police said.

After police explained she could not have the items while she was being processed or inside a cell, Ms. Lunt became furious and stated, “I’m just going to run out of here, then,” according to police.

As she headed toward the dispatch area, she was restrained but continued to yell and swing her arms, said police. After being escorted to the holding cell, struggled with an officer and struck him below his right eye and kicked his right leg, according to police.

Later, Ms. Hunt had to be moved to a padded cell because she had ripped up part of the molding in the female cell, police said.

In addition to the driving-while-intoxicated count, Ms. Hunt was also charged with assault, vandalism with malicious injury to property and refusal to submit to a chemical test.

During a search of the vehicle, police said they found about 18 ounces of marijuana in two sealed bags inside a cardboard box, as well as a scale commonly used to weigh marijuana.

Police said the girl did not sustain any injuries but there was redness on her chest due to the force of the push. The boy left the building after the altercation, and police arrested him at his home.

Raymond J. Mahoney, 34, of 24 Channing St., Newport, was charged at 9:27 p.m. on a bench warrant issued from 2nd District Court.
