PORTSMOUTH — Joseph Amaral, Portsmouth High School’s principal for nearly six years, is leaving his position at the end of the school year, it was announced during Tuesday’s School Committee meeting.

“Recently we were informed, as was the Portsmouth High School community, that Principal Mr. Joseph Amaral will be stepping down at the end of the school year,” said Superintendent Thomas Kenworthy.

Amaral was appointed as PHS principal in July 2016, shortly after Robert Littlefield announced his retirement.

Amaral was a math and science teacher at Portsmouth Middle School for five years before becoming an assistant principal in Barrington. He returned to Portsmouth to be the assistant principal at the middle school for about eight years, then spent nine years as principal before his appointment to the PHS job.
