DUI arrests dominate latest Portsmouth Police report

Here are some highlights from the Portsmouth Police reports from over the past week:

Tuesday, June 13

Police investigated a report of a car on fire in the area of West Main Road and Mail Coach Road shortly after 11 a.m. When they arrived, the fire had already been extinguished by an employee of nearby G&S Auto Repairs. The driver told police he was operating his Oldsmobile south on West Main Road when he observed flames shooting out from underneath its hood.

A vehicle driven by Marnita Chintala of Little Compton struck a young deer that had run out in front of the car as it headed north on Burma Road around 6 p.m. The deer ran away from the scene, according to police. The car sustained minor front-end damage. 

Friday, June 16

Nicholas Lovell, 31, of 24 Child St., Apt. 3, was charged with driving while intoxicated (first offense) at 1:45 a.m. Police said Mr. Lovell’s Jeep was stopped near Sunny Acres after it was clocked at 88 mph in a 50 mph zone on Route 24 southbound. The vehicle had also drifted out of the lane of travel, according to police. Mr. Lovell was also cited for refusing to take a chemical test. 

Kevin E. Silva, 32, of 121 Hamilton Allenton Road, North Kingstown, was charged just before midnight with driving while intoxicated. Police said they pulled Mr. Silvia over on Bristol Ferry Road for speeding and leaving the lane of travel. Mr. Silva was also cited for refusing to submit to a chemical test.

Saturday, June 17

Brendan M. Barry, 50, of 188 Academy Ave., Providence, was arrested on a Superior Court bench warrant shortly before 2 p.m. Police charged Mr. Barry after receiving a report of a suspicious person walking up and down the street in the area of Hargraves Drive at April Lane.

Sunday, June 18

Rafael D. Mejia, 24, of 378 Goodwin St., Apt. C, Fall River, was charged shortly after 1 a.m. with driving while intoxicated (first offense). Police said Mr. Mejia was pulled over on West Main Road near King’s Grant for speeding and drifting between lanes.

Angel Merced, 41, of 34 Bramans Lane, was charged at 12:20 p.m. with driving while intoxicated (first offense) and operating a motor vehicle on a suspended license (second offense), shortly after police received a report of an erratic driver. Police said they found a black sedan that matched the description given by a witness in the parking lot of Ferreira’s Package Store on East Main Road, with Mr. Merced behind the wheel. Several small liquor bottles, some empty and one that had been opened, were found inside the car, according to police.

Steven S. Fusco, 40, of 704 Lamplight Lane, Virginia Beach, Va., was charged at about 11:30 p.m. on two Superior Court bench warrants. Two police officers with knowledge of the warrants responded to an East Main Road residence to arrest Mr. Fusco.
