East Bay girls hockey team focused on championship

Senior leadership is key, says Coach Allison Faria

The East Bay co-op girls ice hockey team is hoping to cap a successful season with a state championship trophy.

The Eagles team, which includes players from Barrington High School, Mt. Hope and Portsmouth, recently defeated Mt. St. Charles in the semifinal playoffs series and will face off against the LaSalle-Moses Brown co-op team in the finals. The first game of the best-of-three series is Friday at 6 p.m. at Brown University.

East Bay Coach Allison Faria said this year's team has worked very hard throughout the season.

"There has been tremendous growth as players and individuals," Coach Faria wrote in a recent email. "We've worked extremely hard and have been successful in our regular season, so there is no doubt on my end what this team is capable of achieving going into playoffs."

Coach Faria added: "They are so smart with the puck. We've had great leadership this season."

East Bay features solid senior leadership, including Carissa Rego, Grace Flaherty, Mary Arkins and Sydney Parkhurst.

"Over the course of the past four years, the Eagles senior class has put in so much hard work," wrote senior co-captain Grace Flaherty. "Having come so close to winning the championship title several times, this year as seniors is our last shot. As a team, we have had such a successful season thus far and I don’t doubt our ability to achieve what we have been working towards all year."

Co-captain Carissa Rego said it's important for this year's Eagles to keep up the positive momentum as they compete in the playoffs. She added: "We can't underestimate any of our opponents and we can't underestimate ourselves either."

The Eagles' defense has been led by junior Madelyn Cox, senior Rego and sophomore Ella Hanley, while the offense features senior Flaherty, freshman Kat Barker, seniors Arkins and Parkhurst and sophomores Madison Cornell and Maeve Harrington.

Coach Faria made special mention of sophomore goalie Ellee Kopecky.

"We are lucky to have her she, is a great individual and a top goalie in the league," said the coach. "We've had great success this season both offensively and defensively. Also in the net!"
