BARRINGTON — The Portsmouth High boys’ varsity basketball team advanced in the Division II playoffs after its defense stymied Barrington in the opening round Friday night.
Playing on the road, the Patriots held the Eagles to just 28 percent shooting from the floor. After Barrington’s Mike Coogan sank a 3-pointer to open the game, the Eagles never again hit one from beyond the paint, going 1-for-26.
Portsmouth, which has won seven of its last nine games, advances to play top-seeded Cumberland Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 7 p.m. on the road. The Patriots lost to the Clippers, the defending champions, 80-70 during the regular season.
The Patriots’ Jack Skrzypiec led all scorers with 24 points. James Reilly added 17 and Andrew Preuit had 8.
Barrington’s Mike Coogan led his team with 22 points, followed by Deven Connors, with 12.
