Portsmouth boys’ hockey team advances to D-II semis

Patriots sweep Ponaganset

Posted

PORTSMOUTH — The fourth-seeded Portsmouth High School boys’ hockey team are set for a Division II semifinals showdown with Barrington.

The Patriots swept Ponaganset in the opening round of the playoffs, 5-2 in the first game on Friday, and 2-1 on the second and deciding matchup on Sunday.

Portsmouth now faces the Barrington (18-1-1) in a series that begins either Thursday or Friday at Portsmouth Abbey.

Portsmouth’s Christian Schenck made up for lost time when he scored three goals in the opener at Portsmouth Abbey Friday. Schenck broke his collarbone before the season began and didn’t make it back on the ice until January. Without him, the Patriots lost four of the season’s first five games.

The fifth-seeded Ponaganset scored the first goal of the game only about a minute in. but Schenck tied things up about three and a half minutes later on an assist by Cam Mello and Tim Jackson. Ponaganset took the lead right back, however, just before the buzzer sounded to end the first period.

That would be all the offense the Chieftains could muster for the game, however, as Portsmouth scored four unanswered goals. Schenck had two goals in the second period, and Niklas Pedersen added a third.

Portsmouth’s fifth goal of the night came from Jackson in a third-period power play.

Matt Nordhill had 22 saves in goal for the Patriots.

On Sunday, Schenck had another goal, as did Jake Fagan, for the 2-1 win at Levy Arena in Burrillville.

Portsmouth finished the regular season in third place in Division II-South, with a 9-6-1 league record and 10-6-1 overall.

Ponaganset finished in second place in Division II-North, going 8-5-3 in the league and 8-6-3 overall.
