PORTSMOUTH — For the first time in their 27-year history, members of the Portsmouth High School boys’ indoor track team can say they’re Division champs.
At Providence Career & Technical Academy (PCTA) Sunday, the Patriots scored 140 point to take the Southern Division title, over North Kingstown, Coventry and seven other teams.
The boys set 21 personal records and won two events: Sophomore Sean Gray in the 1,500-meter run (4:27.23) and senior Landon Rodrigues in the 55-meter hurdles (8.05 seconds).
In the second event, Portsmouth swept the first four places, with Sean Wilkey (8.23), Maciej Tabak (8.57), and Owen Gervelis (8.71) right behind Rodrigues. They alone would have scored seventh out of 10 in the team standings, beating three teams.
The 4x200 relay team of Chris Wilkie, Nick Spaner, Nate DeConto, and Landon Rodrigues set a new PHS record (1:34.66) and took second place. The previous mark of 1:34.9 was set by Tyler Oliveira, Tim Mello, Marcus Sandoval, and Fulvio Bertoluzza.
In addition, all three of Portsmouth’s shot put competitors — Ethan Durant, Ayden Gleeson, and Ben Katin — set personal records.
Some other notable performances:
• Will Kitzmiller took second in the long jump with a best leap of 19 feet, 11.25 inches. Landon Rodrigues came in fourth with a jump of 19 feet, 6 inches.
• Aidan Chen took second place in the high jump with a best effort of 6 feet, 2 inches.
• Chris Vachon took second place in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:51.25. Patrick Orbon took fifth (10:09.92).
• Sean Gray took third in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:46.48. Chris Vachon came in fifth (2:58.51).
• The 4x800-meter relay team ran a 9:21.93, good enough for third place. The 4x400-meter team also came in third, with a time of 3:42.92.
• Nick Spaner (37.76 seconds) and Aidan Chen (38.19) came in fourth and fifth place, respectively, in the 300-meter dash.
• Jack Marston came in fifth in the 1,500-meter run (4:42.23).
