PORTSMOUTH — After a rough start to the season, the Portsmouth High varsity football team seems to have righted the ship with its second straight win Friday night, Oct. 13, at home.

The Patriots defeated Woonsocket, 25-14, improving their record to 2-4 in Division II-B. Portsmouth shut out Shea, 21-0, on Oct. 6.

Portsmouth’s defense was outstanding Friday, making two key intersections which both led to touchdowns.

Early in the game, a deep pass by Woonsocket quarterback Daunte Melton was intercepted by senior John Voute inside the Patriots’ own 10-yard line. After that, sophomore Joseph Sanderson scrambled for a 73-yard run that put the Patriots in the Villa Novans’ red zone.

Then, Patriots junior quarterback Thomas Hurd found Voute in the end zone for a seven-yard TD.

Another interception, this time by senior Christopher Wilkie, put the Patriots at Woonsocket’s 15-yard line, setting up another touchdown as Sanderson ran it in for 6 points.

The Patriots scored again when senior Tyler Hurd reached high over a Woonsocket defender and came down with the ball in the end zone after a three-yard touch pass from Thomas Hurd.

The quarterback threw his third TD of the night when he found Voute in the back of the end zone on a 22-yard toss. Voute grabbed the ball away from a Woonsocket defender who had provided tight coverage.

PHS gained 245 total yards — 100 through and air and 145 on the ground. The Patriots’ defense held Woonsocket to 62 rushing yards.

The Patriots will next face Barrington on the road at 6:15 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20.
