PORTSMOUTH — A New Bedford man was arrested Saturday night on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance.

Barry M. Almeida, 49, of 16 Madeira Ave., Apt. 2S, was also charged with driving while intoxicated and violating a protective order.

Police responded to the area of Route 24 South on the Sakonnet River bridge at about 8:15 p.m. after receiving a report of an erratic driver. They later found the car in the area of West Main Road and Donna Drive, and pulled it over after observing it leaving the lane of travel.

During a search, police said they found two Lorazepam pills inside one of Mr. Almeida’s pockets, but he could not produce a prescription for the drugs. Police said there was an active protection order between Mr. Almeida and a female passenger in the car.

Mr. Almeida was also cited for driving with a suspended license and refusal to submit to a chemical test.
