Portsmouth’s Sandy Point Beach re-opened for swimming

Beach was temporarily closed due to water quality tests

Posted

PORTSMOUTH — Town-owned Sandy Point Beach was re-opened for swimming Thursday after the R.I. Department of Health (RIDOH) closed it down the day before due to high bacteria levels found in the water.

Portsmouth Recreation Director Wendy Bulk said the beach was re-opened for swimming after new water quality tests were conducted Thursday.

In a press release issued Wednesday, RIDOH had also recommended closing Bristol Town Beach and Conimicut Point Beach in Warwick for the same reason. The department also reopened Third Beach in Middletown for swimming based on results from water samples that show bacteria levels within acceptable limits.

RIDOH will continue to monitor and review beach water quality regularly to ensure safe bathing throughout the summer season. The status of a beach may change on a daily basis.

The most up-to-date beach information is available through a recorded message on RIDOH's beaches telephone line at 401/222-2751.
