The 2017-18 season for the Lincoln-East Providence High School boys’ hockey co-op team came to an end last weekend in the quarterfinal round of the Division II championship playoffs as the eighth-seeded Lions were swept in their best-of-three series by top-seeded Barrington.
The Eagles (18-1-1) finished off the Lions (7-11-2) with a 5-3 victory Saturday night, March 10, at the Route 146 Rink in North Smithfield. Barrington, as it did the previous evening, scored first and would not trail the rest of the way. The Eagles led 3-2 after one and 4-2 after two.
In the series opener Friday, March 9, at the Portsmouth Abbey Rink, freshman winger Matt Spears potted a hat-trick and added two assists in leading Barrington to an 8-3 victory.
Spears’ linemate Dominic Robidoux scored two goals with two assists while Drew Sirmalis, Josh Roy and Luke Rudman each scored a goal apiece for the Eagles. Barrington led throughout after Spears opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 1:24 of the first period.
Senior forward Jack Halloran netted two goals and Colby Acciardo scored one for Lincoln-E.P. Townies senior Colin Feeney assisted on Halloran’s first of the night in the second period, trimming the Barrington lead to 2-1 at the time. The Eagles, though would add four more tallies in what was a five-goal middle stanza onslaught to break open the game.
Lincoln-E.P. got one back on Halloran’s second of the night early in the third period before the Eagles punctuated their win with two more goals midway through. Barrington outshot the Lions 43-22 for the evening.
Saturday, Robidoux put Barrington out front four minutes into Game 2. Halloran tied it for the Lions with just over seven minutes gone in the first. Roy again gave the Eagles the lead at 12:12, but Halloran answered to knot the score before Matthew Bates gave back Barrington the lead for keeps with his tally in the final minute of the period.
Robidoux’s second doubled Barrington’s edge and was the lone goal of the second period, one in which the Eagles outshot the Lions, 11-3. In the third, Spears got on the board 61 seconds into the period to make it 5-2 Eagles. Brenden Gannon took one back for Lincoln-E.P. with just over two minutes remaining but the Lions would get no closer.
East Providence senior Alex Peters was in net for the Lions Saturday and was credited with 23 saves on 28 shots. Lincoln-E.P. finished with 18 shots on net. Freshman netminder Matt Hosey was between the pipes in each of the wins for the Eagles, making 19 and 15 saves, respectively.
Barrington, led by city resident and former EPHS head coach Kevin Croke, advances to the semifinals opposite fourth-seeded Portsmouth, winners of quarter series over fifth-seeded Ponaganset, Thursday evening, March 15.
