PORTSMOUTH — Two drivers were injured when their cars collided in a rollover crash on West Main Road Friday afternoon.

According to Detective Lt. Michael Arnold, police responded to West Main Road at Corys Lane around 12:20 p.m. Friday for a report of a motor vehicle involving a rollover.

When they arrived they found two vehicles, a 2015 Toyota Scion and a 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe, in the northbound lanes of West Main Road. The latter vehicle was on its roof.

Lt. Arnold said police determined that that Toyota, operated by a 35-year-old man, and the Hyundai, operated by a 63-year-old man, were both traveling northbound on West Main Road near the intersection of Corys Lane.

The Toyota was in the left lane and swerved into the right lane because another vehicle in front of its was trying to turn left onto Corys Lane, he said.

The driver of the Hyundai swerved into the embankment to avoid colliding with the Toyota and rolled over as a result, Lt. Arnold said.

“The accident also caused a utility pole to snap and live wires were hanging in the street,” he said.

Portsmouth firefighters transported both drivers to a local hospital to be treated for minor injuries. National Grid was also on scene to attend to the pole and wires.

“The roadway took approximately one hour to fully clear,” Lt. Arnold said.
