PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School girls’ varsity soccer team notched a win and honored the memory of a local resident Tuesday night.

The team had an easy time with Exeter-West Greenwich, dominating in a 6-0 shutout on the main turf field at PHS.

Players also took part in the second annual Pink Out to honor the memory of Linda Hobbs, the mother of former PHS player Maddie Hobbs, who now plays for the University of Pittsburgh. Ms. Hobbs was also the wife to a current soccer referee.

The event was organized by senior captain Abby Kaull as her senior project, with assistant coach Lauren Bulk acting as her mentor.

The team raised more than $2,000 for the nonprofit Three Angels Fund, in memory of Ms. Hobbs.

“They have annual fund-raisers where they raise money to donate to the IV Therapy Lab at Newport Hospital, as well as set some aside for grants for locals who are going through cancer and could use some help financially,” Ms. Bulk explained.

Caelan Corey and Jane Kaull scored two goals each for the Patriots, with Sydney Bryske and Claire Williams adding a goal apiece.

The win improved Portsmouth’s record to 8-2-1 in Division I.

The Patriots next take on Lincoln High School on the road at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13.
