PORTSMOUTH/TIVERTON — If you were wondering what all those bicyclists were doing on the roads this morning, they were participating in the 4 Bridges Ride.

The event was a 26-mile charity bike ride hosted by the R.I. Turnpike and Bridge Authority (RITBA) Foundation. All proceeds from the event will benefit Save The Bay.

It began at 7 a.m. and police began blocking off some roads in the impacted areas as early as 4:30 a.m. Early morning motorists on Aquidneck Island experienced slight delays and traffic detours due to the ride.

During the course of the ride, cyclists pedaled across the four bridges owned by RITBA — the Jamestown, Newport, Sakonnet and Mt. Hope bridges — for a total of 26 miles. The ride began on the North Kingstown side of the Jamestown Bridge and ended outside Roger Williams University on the Bristol side of the Mt. Hope Bridge.
