A group of dedicated volunteers, with assistance from generous donors, local officials and the town’s Department of Public Works, has presented residents with a magnificent gift: a beautiful new off-leash dog park at Melville Park.
We commend the Portsmouth Dog Park Planning Committee and its chairwoman, Bunny Miller, for their dogged efforts in seeing this project through to completion — and keeping their promise to get it done without using tax dollars.
The dog park, we hope, will also help introduce some Portsmouth residents and visitors to Melville Park, one of the town’s hidden jewels.
The former Navy property — about 135 acres with six miles of trails — features coastal woodland, wetlands, brooks and freshwater ponds for fishing, not to mention an attractive campground that’s under separate management. Still, many Portsmouth residents have never even set foot there.
The dog park won’t officially be open until next spring in order to give the grass more time to grow, but the committee held a sneak preview on Dec. 10 that was a rousing success.
Another preview day is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 26, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., weather permitting. Even if you don’t own a dog, we urge you to check it out and explore Melville Park.
