It’s that time of year to head to Town Hall to buy your annual transfer station stickers.
The 2017 stickers cost $160 for one vehicle — a $10 increase over last year — and $10 for each additional vehicle per household.
Last year’s transfer station sticker allows you entry until Jan. 31. The new stickers went on sale Tuesday and they’re available at the tax collector’s office at Portsmouth Town Hall during normal business hours: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, and 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday.
The office will also be open for sticker sales only from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4.
To obtain a sticker, you must bring a copy of your valid registration showing you are registered in Portsmouth for each vehicle for which you are requesting a sticker. Residents with leased vehicles must provide proof of automobile insurance showing their Portsmouth address at which they reside.
Stickers may be obtained through the mail using the form available on the town’s website and at Town Hall. Mail applications may be deposited in the tax payment drop box at the Town Hall. The town is not responsible for lost mail applications.
The 2017 transfer station sticker is good for one year, with a grace period through Jan. 31, 2018. Call the tax collector’s office with questions at 401/683-1214.
Higher tipping fees
Citing anticipated increases in tipping fees by the R.I. Resource Recovery Corporation, the Town Council last month voted to increase the price of the sticker by $10. If the town did nothing, it would be running deficit at the transfer station of about $25,000, according to Recycling Coordinator Ray Antaya.
The transfer station is for the disposal of residential household waste only. No waste from businesses, contractors, landscapers or commercial or agricultural activity is accepted. Recycling is mandated by state law.
