Letter: Goal of potable water at affordable cost has been met

To the editor:

A major success is turning the faucet and taking it for granted that the water that comes forth is safe and drinkable. In many parts of the country and world, healthy drinking water is a life-or-death matter.

As the treasurer for nearly six years for the Portsmouth Water and Fire District, I can say the goal of potable water at an affordable cost to Portsmouth residents has been met.

The seven board members and entire staff have maintained a continual functioning water system. A major improvement underway is a new $3,000,000 pumping station on Union Street. This station should help serve the needs of users for the next 50 years.

I have had the pleasure to work with dedicated men and women that bring excellent service to all customers. It has been my goal from day one to support to the best of my abilities the Portsmouth Water and Fire District as its treasurer.

The future looks bright for Portsmouth with an integral utility being run in such a professional manner.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
