To the editor:
The Portsmouth Historical Society recently received an $8,000 grant from The R.I. Heritage Harbor Foundation to replace historic signs in Portsmouth.
The grant was obtained in conjunction with Nathan Minese's senior project. He plans on replacing the two historical signs at Lehigh Hill and add another sign in that location about the coal industry in Portsmouth; replace one sign at Heritage Park about the Battle of Rhode Island; add a sign at the Melville Depot about the island train system and the Civil War Hospital; and to replace the stone marker at the entrance to Fort Butts, which has already been completed.
Nathan spent many hours researching the original signs, finding companies to construct the signs, making copy to be edited, meeting with town officials and local historians and collecting funds to complete the project. This ongoing project is in its final stages of which Nathan will see it through to completion.
He has gained much assistance from Jim Garman, Gary Gump, Dave Gleason and others from the Portsmouth Historical Society; Russell DeSimone, Patrick Connelly and the R.I. Heritage Harbor Foundation; Richard Rainer, Brian Woodhead and the Portsmouth DPW; and Frank L. Grzyb, author of “Rhode Island’s Civil War Hospital: Life and Death at Portsmouth Grove, 1862–1865.”
In addition to the grant, Nathan raised $1,400 from area residents. Nathan would like to thank all of the Portsmouth residents who donated money for the project and all of the businesses which allowed him to put donation cans on their counters: Moriarty 's Liquor Locker, Reidy's Family Restaurant, Allen's Wine & Spirits, Ferreira's Package Store and The Portsmouth Free Public Library.
