PROVIDENCE — The Portsmouth High School girls’ varsity indoor track team was the runner-up in the Rhode Island championship meet held Saturday at Providence Career and Technical Track Center.

It was an improvement over last year’s showing, when the Patriots finished sixth as a team. La Salle Academy, which also won last year, finished first with 60.5 points, with Portsmouth (53) and Barrington (51) taking second and third.

The Patriots’ senior runner Elizabeth Sullivan won two races: The 1,000 meters in a time of 3:04.14, and the 1,500 meters in 4:44.35. 

Her teammate, senior Olive Allen, placed second in the 1,000 meters in a time of 3:04.55. Allen also took second place in the 3,000 meters, clocking in at 10:20.62.

Another senior, Nikki Merrill, came in second in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:38.14.

The 4x800-meter relay team (Sabrina Leary, Keegan Sullivan, Abby Gilpin and Zoie Howes) came in second place with a time of 9:58.82.

Here are the other results for the girls:

• Gabrielle Bryan, a junior, took sixth place in the shot put with a best throw of 34 feet, 0.75 inches.

• In the 1,500 meters, sophomores Sabrina Leary (5:08.52) and Abby Gilpin (5:12.52) came in seventh and ninth, respectively.

• Meghan Lehane, a sophomore, ran a 9.35 in the 55-meter hurdles for a seventh-place finish.

• Lois Manning, a sophomore, took 10th place in the 300-meter dash with a time if 44.9 seconds.

• The 4x400-meter relay team (Keegan Sullivanm Jessie Chen, Sabrina Leary and Zoie Howes) ran a 4:28.56 to finish in 11th place.

• Meghan Lehane came in 12th in the long jump with a best leap of 15 feet, 4 inches.

• The 4x200-meter relay team (Jessie Chen, Abbie Armijo, Kate Famiglietti and Lois Manning) came in 13th place with a time of 1:53.39.

Boys’ results

Here’s how members of the PHS boys’ indoor track team fared in the individual events:

Ben Chase, a junior, finished in 10th place in the 3,000-meter run, clocking a time of 9:11.58.

The 4x800-meter relay team (Hunter Culberson, Vincent Gardner, Dan Sullivan and Joe Hook) came in eighth place with a time of 8:44.43.

In the long jump, Michael Thomas Morrissey, a junior, came in 17th place with a best leap of 18 feet, 5.75 inches.
