Coach calls Moses Brown player Emma Campbell ‘our David Ortiz’

PORTSMOUTH — As a star player on the Moses Brown varsity softball team, Portsmouth’s Emma Campbell has a flair for coming up big in the clutch.

So much, in fact, that head coach Pete DeStefano refers to her as the team’s “David Ortiz.”

“She has already won two tournament elimination games  with late-inning dramatics,” Mr. DeStefano stated on a candidate form to nominate Emma for the Gatorade Player of the Year Award.

“Emma’s walk-off RBI hit in last year’s RIIL D1 state semifinal to defeat Coventry 1-0 was arguably the biggest hit by a Moses Brown player since the 2009 state championship season. She also had a seventh-inning home run at Notte Park two years ago to defeat North Providence 4-2 in another tournament elimination game,” he wrote.

Emma is now parlaying her success into her college plans. She recently committed to play Division I softball for Stony Brook University in New York.

Emma helped lead the Quakers to their first Division I softball championship last year and was a First Team Providence Journal All-Stater.

Mr. DeStefano called her a softball “magician” in his Gatorade candidate form.

“She just makes things happen,” he stated. “I watch a ton of softball and Emma Campbell is a rarity. She is a highly intelligent player who creatively delivers positive results. She has awesome power and can hit a ball a ‘country mile,’ yet when needed she can stun everybody by laying down a totally unexpected perfect bunt single.”

Defensively, he added, “she is as smart and versatile as they come.”

In addition to her accomplishments on the field, Emma is also a top student academically and serves as a role model for classmates due to her classroom success and her involvement in community service, Mr. DeStefano said.

Locally, she’s participated in the Adopt a Family for Christmas program — gifts are purchased, wrapped and delivered to needy families — through St. Barnabas Church since 2010.

In 2015 as a student at Portsmouth Middle School, Emma won the school’s Student Athlete-Citizen of the Year Award.
