PHS senior project to raise money for more six-strings

PORTSMOUTH — Two Portsmouth High School students are doing their part to put more guitars into the hands of their classmates.

For their senior project, Maddie Jarvis and Nate Rinkel are raising money to purchase new guitars for the school. Along with Joseph Rebelo and Dave Pavao, they’re members of the band The Project, which is playing a fund-raising concert from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 14, at the Newport Blues Café.

All proceeds will go toward the purchase of new guitars at the school. If you can’t make the gig, you can donate on the YouCaring websiteOn the website, Maddie explains her reasons for wanting to purchase new guitars for the school.

“Quite frankly, the majority of guitars they have for the guitar classes are terrible,” she said. “They’re old, broken, and the tuning keys are literally rusting. No one should learn how to play guitar this way!”

The fund-raiser is also intended to help the PHS Music Boosters, since any leftover money raised will be donated to that organization.

“The PHS Music Boosters assist any music students with a sort of financial aid,” Maddie said. “It assists them with paying for band or chorus trips that they may have trouble paying for. Everyone needs to belong somewhere in high school and music was that place for me. I want to ‘pay it forward’ and make sure that music is there for other students that follow the same path I did. Thank you for supporting me in giving back to the community that has given so much to me!”

She gave a “big shoutout” to not only the Newport Blues Café but TJ’s Music in Fall River, which has agreed to provide her and Nate a 10-percent discount on the purchase price of the guitars.
