PORTSMOUTH — Four turnovers by the visiting South Kingstown Rebels translated to a 27-14 victory for the Portsmouth High School’s varsity football team Friday night.
The Patriots didn’t exactly play mistake-free football themselves, as they had three turnovers. However, Portsmouth took advantage of every Rebel turnover, recovering two fumbles and notching an interception to set up good field position for the home team.
Brian Hamilton’s tough hit on the Rebels’ Paul Gonsalves in the first quarter was recovered by Kyle Bicho, playing as a defensive back at the time.
After switching to quarterback on the other side of the ball, Bicho hit Hamilton for a 30-plus-yard TD pass. In the next quarter, Bicho made an interception and later threw a touchdown pass to Connor Stone, making it 14-0.
The Rebels made it 14-6 at halftime, but fumbled the ball on its first possession in the third quarter. Bicho later found Peyton Robinson for a 30-yard touchdown play that made it 20-6.
Later on Bicho himself was intercepted and the Rebels capitalized, making it 20-14.
Portsmouth’s last score came with just a minute left in the game, when Bicho threw to Robinson who ran into the end zone.
The Patriots, the defending public school state champions, remained undefeated at 4-0 in Division I-A.
Next up for Portsmouth is a road game against Bishop Hendricken on Friday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m.
