PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School girls’ gymnastics team finished the regular season atop Division II, but had to settle for third place at the state championship meet Saturday at Rhode Island College.
The Patriots scored 128.675 points as a team, behind overall winner West Warwick (135.050) and Warwick Co-op (132.20).
Portsmouth and West Warwick both finished the regular season with 13-1 records in Division II.
Junior Caroline Daly put in the strongest showing for Portsmouth. She finished 11th in the all-around competition with 33.375 points (8:35 for the vault, 8.15 bars, 8.25 beam, 8.625 floor exercise).
Taylor Sharpio, a freshman, finished 26th in the all-around with 31.975 points (8.35 vault, 7.8 bars, 7.2 beam, 8.625 floor).
Here are some scores for other Portsmouth athletes:
• Sophia Sousa, freshman: 8.225 vault, 7.7 bars, 6.8 beam, 8.4 floor
• Melanie Williams, sophomore: 8.3 vault, 7.55 bars, 7.85 beam
• Maura Dennis: 8.375 vault, 5.65 bars, 7.05 beam
• Kailey Oliveira, junior: 7.95 vault, 4.85 bars
The standout athlete of the meet was Alyssa Worthington of West Warwick. She was the all-around champion and took first place in the vault, bars and floor events.
