PORTSMOUTH — The 2018 vehicle stickers for the Hedly Street transfer station are now on sale to Portsmouth residents.
Stickers are available for sale at the Tax Collector’s office at Portsmouth Town Hall, 2200 East Main Road, during normal business hours: Monday through Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
For residents’ convenience, the Tax Collector’s office will be open for sticker sales only on Saturday, Feb. 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Last year’s transfer station stickers allow entry until the end of this month.
Stickers cost $140 for the first vehicle and $10 for one additional vehicle per household. To obtain a sticker, bring a copy of your valid registration showing you are registered in Portsmouth for each vehicle for which you are requesting a sticker. Residents with leased vehicles must provide proof of automobile insurance showing their Portsmouth address at which they reside.
The transfer station is for the disposal of residential household waste only. No waste from any form of commercial or agricultural activity is accepted. Recycling is mandated by state law.
New this year is the town’s pay-as-you-throw (PAYT) program to be used in conjunction with its transfer station. All residential household waste must be disposed of in specially marked town-approved bags that residents will be able to purchase at area stores beginning mid-January.
Enforcement of this program begins Feb. 1. Recycling can be disposed of free of charge.
For full details of the program, visit www.portsmouthri.com/182/Transfer-Station-Solid-Waste. When you receive your sticker, you’ll receive the rules for the transfer station.
Stickers may be obtained through the mail using the form available on the town’s website and Town Hall. Mail applications may be deposited in the tax payment drop box at the Town Hall. The town is not responsible for lost mail applications.
If you have any questions about the stickers, call the Tax Collector’s office at 401/683-1214. Questions on the new PAYT program should be directed to Recycling Coordinator Ray Antaya at 401/643-0359 or rantaya@portsmouthri.com.
Mr. Antaya will hold a workshop on the new PAYT program at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 17, at the Portsmouth Town Hall Council Chambers.
