South Kingstown avenges earlier loss

Posted

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School boys’ varsity soccer team was knocked out of the Division I playoffs Friday night by South Kingstown, a team it had previously beaten in the regular season.

The rebels avenged the earlier 3-2 loss with a 3-1 win in the quarterfinal matchup in Portsmouth.

The Patriots fell behind at halftime, 2-0, but got back into the game when Mike Tavarez found the back of the net against South Kingstown goalkeeper Colin O’Grady in the 65th minute of play.

South Kingstown would score again, however, with seven minutes left in the game.

The Rebels outshot Portsmouth, 13-4.

The Patriots finished the season with an 8-4-3 record in Division I, and 8-5-3 overall.
