Richard Newell Owen, 82, of Prudence Island and Stoughton, Mass., formerly of Easton, Mass., died at home surrounded by family and friends on June 8, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born April 22, 1934, he was the son of the late Coburn and Evelyn (Mitchell) Owen.  

Mr. Owen is survived by his loving wife Pat (Regan) of 57 years, and his two children, Stacey Blount and her husband, Kevin of Sandwich, Mass., and Charlene LaFerriere and her husband, Brian of Stoughton.  

He leaves behind his four grandchildren, Dan and Chris Blount, and Jill and Kelsie LaFerriere. He is also survived by his brother Edward and his wife Elsie, his niece Christine Bradley, and two nephews, Edward “Mitch” and Tim Owen. 

Mr. Owen or “Dick” as he was affectionately known, graduated from Stoughton High and joined the apprenticeship program at Bethlehem Steel. He served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict and after the war returned to work at Quincy Shipyard. Dick continued on even after the shipyard closed, retiring as a supervisor in 1987. 

Dick was a life-long summer resident of Prudence Island. After retirement, he and his wife Pat spent the majority of their time on the Island. He was a prominent long-term member of the Prudence Island Volunteer Fire Department including a role as Assistant Chief, and was very involved in the Prudence community as a whole.  

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Dick’s wish was that friends enjoy a cold beverage in his memory.
