PORTSMOUTH — A recent Eagle Scout project completed by David Thieme will more than double the current parking space for the Portsmouth Historical Society on Sundays.
With the assistance of his fellow Scouts from Troop 1, David repaired the broken stonewall between the museum and the shopping center next door. In doing so, he created an opening that allows visitors to enter the Historical Society property from the neighboring parking lot in front of Rocco’s Little Italy.
He and his crew also built an earthen stepping stone ramp on Society property to make the use of the new opening easier and safer. The project was completed Sept. 15.
All materials for the project were donated by local merchants, including J&J Materials, Rhode Island Nursery, RJ Cawley and Sons, and Agway.
“This is a very useful project for visitors to our museum, especially on Sunday afternoons when the stores in the shopping center are closed and we are open,” said Society President Jim Garman. “We are very grateful to David and his Scout friends for doing a very worthwhile project.”
The Portsmouth Historical Society, located at the corner of East Main Road and Union Street, recently closed for the season. It is open to the public from 2-5 p.m. every Sunday from Memorial Day Weekend to Columbus Day Weekend.
