PORTSMOUTH — Portsmouth High School’s sports “pioneers” will be honored in a special ceremony Oct. 14, and advance tickets are now on sale.

The Portsmouth Athletic Hall of Fame is a group of PHS's most distinguished student athletes, coaches and supporters.

The first inductees — 15 coaches, two championship teams from 1968, an athletic director and an “athletic booster” — will be honored on Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Green Valley Country Club, 371 Union St. in Portsmouth. The event will begin with a cocktail hour and hors d'oeuvres at 4:30 p.m., followed by the induction ceremony at 5:30 p.m. A cash bar will be open.

Tickets are $25 and may be purchased at www.portsmouthathletichof.com. You can also mail a check made out to PHSAHOFA, Portsmouth High School, ATTN Shaun Horgan, 120 Education Lane, Portsmouth, RI 02871. For questions, contact Shaun Horgan at horgans@portsmouthschoolsri.org.

Organizations and businesses can sponsor The PHS Athletic Hall of Fame through donations in exchange for advertising space on the website and in the program booklet.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
