Woman charged with assault after fight at Portsmouth gas station

PORTSMOUTH — A Dartmouth woman was charged with felony assault and resisting arrest early Sunday after she allegedly fought with a man at Xtra Mart on West Main Road.

Police responded to a report of an assault in progress at the gas station and store, located at 1568 West Main Road, at about 2 a.m. They arrived to find a man carrying a woman later identified as Mary M. Shea, 21, of 455 Old Westport Road, while trying to walk back to a vehicle, police said.

A witness said that earlier, the car had parked in the lot and Ms. Shea and the man exited the vehicle and began fighting. The witness said Ms. Shea repeatedly slapped, scratched and struck the man.

The couple then entered the store, where they continued fighting and knocked over various items, police were told. The store’s security footage appeared to back up the witness’ statement, police said.

Ms. Shea was uncooperative while being questioned and resisted being handcuffed, according to police. Police said the male victim’s left eye was slightly swollen and red, and he had scratches to his chest, right hand and right wrist.
