"It is an increasing necessity that all should be allowed to achieve"

I stress the word "all".

My recommendation is to visit the inner city school systems and walk the footsteps of some of these students and teachers. Put away the lofty dreams and actually see what is going on. These kids are up against extremely difficult situations, as are the teachers who are trying to help them achieve. Many schools in RI lack computers and resources that would help children not only achieve a higher education, but also help steer many away from drugs, gangs, and difficult personal situations. If we invest in our children earlier the results will be better and they will create more opportunities for themselves.

"All", should mean all.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
