I've noticed when I shop at Shaw's that the checkout clerks don't check the shopping carts thoroughly. There was one time when I had put an 8-pack of paper towels on the lower rack of a shopping cart (near the wheels). When I checked out, I forgot that it was under there, and I didn't pay for it, and no one said anything. (I discovered my mistake when I got outside.)
According to a survey in Consumer Reports magazine, Shaw's is one of the most expensive supermarket chains in the country. That's no excuse for stealing, of course, but I just want to point that out. They actually sell some items for a full dollar more than other nearby markets.
